Crate Training Puppies

After we wean them, the crate training of puppies is
probably the most important task that you have. It is very
important that you trying to do this while your puppy is still
young.
There are many reasons why you should do the crate training
of puppies. First of all it provides them with an increased
sense of security. Dogs like having their own space and
boundaries. They also like having a quiet area that they can
call their own. A crate provides them with all of this and
more.
Some people may view a dog crate as simply a way to keep
your dog locked, and from messing up the house, which may be
true, but it also helps your puppy tremendously.
Crate Size
Before you begin this type of training you must make sure
that you buy the right type of dog crate. There are many
different crates on the market, but the most important feature
you should look for is the size.
The crate should not be so large that your puppy feels like
he can urinate on one corner and safely lay in the opposite
corner. Your crate should be small enough that your puppy does
not want to go to the bathroom in it. This also helps your
puppy feel more like that is his home and it needs to be kept
clean.
One way to save money, it is to buy a large dog crate, and
simply sectioned it off with boards or cardboard to keep your
puppy confined to a smaller space. Although the space should be
large enough to allow your dog to turn around and lay down
in.
Introduction
At the beginning you should not simply just put your dog
inside the crate and walk away. When it comes to the crate
training of puppies, it should be done very slowly.
At the beginning simply just place the crate out in the
middle of the living room so your dog gets used to its smell
and explore around and inside of it.
After your dog gets used to it, put some toys inside of it
and a nice blanket to encourage your dog to go inside. If your
dog goes inside by itself reward him with a treat and close the
door.
Initially you should only keep your dog locked up for maybe
like five minutes at a time, and then after that you can slowly
start expanding that time.
Whimpering in Crate
Many pet owners have problems with their dogs whimpering and
the dog crate. Many owners unknowingly reinforce this behavior
when they give the dog attention for doing so.
If you do find your dog is whimpering in the crate, one way
to stop it is to simply block their view of you. Another thing
you might consider is moving the crate into another room. Most
dogs stop whimpering once they realize that you're not going to
come and let them out right away.
Summary
In summary, Crate training puppies should
be done while they are young. The right size of dog crate
should be chosen, and you should slowly get them used to being
in the crate for short periods of time.
