Dog Barking in the Crate?

If your dog is barking in the crate, know that it is a very
common behavioral problem. Most of the time this type of
behavior is attributed to improper training on your part.
But there are some easy solutions that you can use to get
immediate relief from this problem.
Why They Bark
First of all, realize that your dog is merely barking to get
attention and likely to get out of the crate itself. Most dog
owners unknowingly reinforce this behavior because when their
dog started barking, they immediately go over to the crate and
pet the dog.
Thus, the dog gets a positive reward out of this behavior,
and so the barking in the crate continues and seems to be
getting worse.
Start Over
In order to break bad habits you need to start your crate
training over from the beginning.
This means you must make your dog find the crate more
attractive again. First of all put it in a better location
where your dog will walk past it quite often during the day.
Next, make it even more attractive to him by putting his
favorite toys in it and maybe a more comfortable blanket.
Your dog should actually want to go in his crate because it
is a safe haven.
Additional Tips
> Most dogs will stop barking if they
cannot see you. You might want to try limiting their view of
you at night by placing cardboard or a blanket in front of the
crate.
> Barking is usually a sign of excess
energy. Before placing your dog in the crate take your dog for
a run or for a walk around the neighborhood. If the dog is
tired, it's much less likely to bark and would just as soon
rather sleep.
