Other dogs dig because they're simply bored and have a lot of pent-up energy. These dogs probably do not get walked very much, and have so much energy they don't know what else to do, so they take up digging as their new hobby.

How to Stop Dog Digging in Yard

The first step to stop your dog from digging in the yard is to offer a great alternative to them. This could be in the form of a sandbox, or a remote area of the yard where the grass is already torn up and it is much easier for them to dig in.

A sand box or a pre-dug section of the yard is much more acceptable for a dog to dig in. Ways to make this area even more attractive is to put dog treats around it, or to bury bones for them to find.

After you have offered your dog a great alternative, you must deter them from using other sections of the yard.

This might include monitoring your dog while there are outside for the first several days. This might be hard to do if your dog is outside all day long. But if they're only outside for a short amount time each day, you should really try and monitor them until they learn where to dig in the yard.

You can also make areas where they like to dig less attractive by either covering these areas with boards, or wetting down the area with a hose to make it more muddy.

Summary

Remember your dogs digging in the yard is a habit. And habits can sometimes be a hard thing to break. But if you have patience you can quickly teach your dog a better alternative, so you are happy, your dog is happy and your yard looks beautiful.
