Dog Digging Under the Fence?

Nothing can be more frustrating for an owner then to have your dog digging under the fence. Not only does this ruin your yard and fence, but it can also be dangerous for your dog. Some dogs crawl under the fence and escape. This may lead to your dog being stolen, or worse, like being hit by a car.

Because of all these negative consequences it's a very important that you put a stop to your dog getting under the fence as soon as possible.

1.  Figure Out Why

First of all, issued trying to figure out why your dog is doing this in the first place. If your dog is not neutered or spayed, maybe they're trying to escape so they can mate. If this is the case you may want to look into getting them spayed or neutered.

2. Prevent Boredom

Second of all, many dogs try and dig under the fence simply because they are bored. Look around your yard and try and place more toys and activities for your dog to do. If your yard is small, consider taking your dog for more walks around the neighborhood to expand some of that mischievous energy.

3.  Offer Alternatives

Third, some breeds of dogs just like to dig a lot more than others. If you think that your dog is one of these, let it dig in a designated are or even a sandbox. Offering an alternative to fence digging is often the best solution.


Lastly, if you're a truly unable to control your dog, you may want to think about putting in a stronger fence. Look into a fence that actually begins below ground. These are a little bit more expensive, but can save you the worry of having your dog possibly escape.  In extreme cases you may just want to think about having your dog tethered so it is unable to reach the fence in the first place.
