Golden Retriever Puppy Training

Here are some tips when it comes to Golden Retriever
puppy training and how to deal with common behavioral
issues that tend to arise with this breed.
Developed as a breed in the 1800's, Golden's are known to be
very intelligent and eager to please their masters.
1. Stop Chewing Problems
Golden Retriever puppies love to chew on things and tend to
chew on almost anything that they can reach. They probably have
this natural instinct because they are hunting dogs and are
trained to retrieve things. Another reason why puppies
might like to chew on things is that it might help to relieve
the pain of the teething process.
One way to stop your dog from chewing on things is to take
some ice cubes and to put them in an old sock. This will become
your puppy's new chew toy whenever they are chewing on anything
that you do not want to chew on. One main problem with having
them chew on a socket is that they can always swallow pieces of
it. Which is why you should always monitor them when they're
doing this.
If you don't want to give them an old sock, give them an
alternative to toy. It is very important that you always give
them something alternative to chew on and not just tell them
not to chew at all.
2. Leash Training Problems
Leash training should be an early part of Golden Retriever
puppy training. As soon as possible get them used to wearing a
collar with the leash attached. You can have them just drag a
leash around the house until they get used to it.
Once they're used to the collar and leash you can start
picking up the leash and try to coax your dog along, perhaps
with a treat.
It is important that you only reward positive leash
behavior, otherwise your dog will end up dragging you through
the streets!
3. Stopping Digging Problems
Again since these dogs are hunters, they love to digging,
which can be very frustrating if you have a beautiful backyard
that is filled with holes. Even for dogs that are inside they
might try to dig through your new carpeting.
Again, just like when you want to stop chewing problem, when
it comes to stopping a dog digging, be sure to offer them an
alternative. This could be allowing them to only dig in the
sandbox, or in a certain section of the yard.
One way to entice some in this area is to bury treasure, dog
bones or other treats.
One last note: Remember, Golden Retriever
puppy training should be fun, not stressful.
This time you spend now with your puppy will bond the two of
you together for life.
