In fact this should lead to the dog being removed from the room, ignored, or put back inside if its crate.

Offering alternatives to bad behaviors works in correcting many incorrect dog behaviors. For example if you know that your dog wants to chew on your shoes, simply offer at a better alternative like a rawhide chew toy.

Practicing

When teaching your dog a new and improved behavior, you should keep practicing it until your dog understands what to do. For example if your dog jumps up on people when they come to visit your house, have your neighbors come over for a visit and see how your dog reacts after his training.

If your dog does not respond properly on the first try, ask your neighbors to leave and come in through the door again. And then keep molding and shaping your dog's behavior until you have the desired one. This is the best way to keep stop your dog from jumping up on people.
