Stop Your Dog From Jumping Up on People

If you want to stop your dog from jumping up on people know
that you're not alone. This is a very common behavioral problem
that many owners unknowingly reinforce in their dog.
Why Do Dogs Jump?
Before we eliminate this behavior and stop your dog from
jumping up on people, it is very important that you understand
exactly why they're doing it in the first place.
Some dogs do this merely to gain attention, because they
know that if do they not do this to get attention, they will be
ignored.
Other dogs do this because they know that they will get a
food treat if they do this, or fed sooner.
Whatever the reason that your dog is doing the jumping, try
to figure it out, because this is the fastest way to eliminate
this common behavioral problem.
How to Stop Dog Jumping
The first part to stopping this behavior, is to no longer
give it any positive rewards for your dog. If your dog does
start jumping up on people, your dog should not be petted or be
given any treats at all. In fact this should lead to the dog
being removed from the room, ignored, or put back inside if its
crate.
The second part to overcoming this bad behavior is to teach
your dog some alternative behaviors. Many dogs jump because
they're simply excited to see their owner. Instead of allowing
them to jump, you can train them to roll over in front of you
if they are excited about something.
Offering alternatives to bad behaviors works in correcting
many incorrect dog behaviors. For example if you know that your
dog wants to chew on your shoes, simply offer at a better
alternative like a rawhide chew toy.
Practicing
When teaching your dog a new and improved behavior, you
should keep practicing it until your dog understands what to
do. For example if your dog jumps up on people when they come
to visit your house, have your neighbors come over for a visit
and see how your dog reacts after his training.
If your dog does not respond properly on the first try, ask
your neighbors to leave and come in through the door again. And
then keep molding and shaping your dog's behavior until you
have the desired one. This is the best way to keep stop your
dog from jumping up on people.
