Teach Your Dog To Come

Many people want to teach their dog to come to them. This is an important command for many dogs to learn, because not only can it be a command that can save their lives, like getting out of a busy street, but it can also help strengthen the bond.

Teaching this command should be one of the very first commands you teach your dog after teaching your dog how to sit.

1.  Teach Dog to Sit

In order for you to teach your dog to come, you must first teach your dog to sit. Making your dogs sit in one spot while you walk away is simply the easiest way to teach your dog to come to you.

That is why you have to teach your dog how to sit first. Some people teach the dog to sit if via the natural method where they simply raise a dog treat above their dog's nose and back until the dog is forced to sit.

This is what natural dog training is all about. You can also use more traditional methods where you say the sit command and push your dog's butt down. Either method works just fine for teaching your dog how to sit.

2.  Teach Dog To Stay

Now after you've taught your dog how to sit, you have to teach your dog how to stay, so that you can back away from them. The best way to do this is to hold your hand up to their face and say stay. Then slowly back away from them.

It will take several repetitions of doing this until you are able to back away at a certain distance. But most dogs will catch on to this fairly easily.

3.  Teach Dog To Come

Finally after you teach your dog to sit and stay, you can teach your dog to come to you. Have your dogs sit and stay in one spot and then slowly backed away from them. Then most people are either clap their hands together and say come, or some variation of it.

Most dogs will then enthusiastically run towards their owner. You can help encourage this behavior if you give your dog a treat when your dog gets to you.

Best Tip

If you really want to speed along the process of teaching your dog to come, try and do this training right before a meal time when your dog is the hungriest. It is during this time that they will respond best to a command that has a food reward.
