Toilet Training Puppies

When it comes to toilet training puppies, we all want to get it right the first time. This is because no one likes cleaning up those little happy accidents on your nice carpet.

The proper toilet training of puppies is necessary in order for you to have a long and happy and healthy relationship together.

This type of training should be your top priority when you bring your new puppy home. And while some people might get lucky and have their dog trained overnight, this is very rare and it usually takes up to several weeks. But you should start seeing some results after just several days of training.

Quickest Results

If you want to get the quickest results when it comes to toilet training puppies, you need to be on constant surveillance 24 hours a day. Unfortunately most people simply cannot do this because you have to go to work and you have to sleep.  This would only be possible if you have a lot of children or a lot of help.

If you did have a lot of help, you could take your puppy out for a potty break every half hour until they get used to that schedule. And then you could slowly start reducing that interval to every hour. But this is simply not feasible for most people.

Realistic Potty Training

A more realistic potty training schedule, is to take your dog out as often as possible when you're home. And also to take them for a bathroom break after they are done eating and drinking.

Also at night you should remove their food and water bowls at least three hours before bedtime. And then take them for a walk before you go to bed.

When You Are Not At Home

When you're not at home, you should put your puppy in a room that is lined with newspapers. In this room you should also put their food and water bowls and any dog toys.

In the beginning your dog will love running around all those newspapers and will probably scatter them all over. But you have to make sure you rearrange the newspapers every day and replace the dirty ones to keep the room clean.

Slowly over time you should decrease the amount of area in the room that is lined with newspaper. Your dog will eventually catch on that they should only go to the bathroom where the newspaper is. This will become their bathroom spot.

After your puppy gets used to going on only one sheet of paper, then you can move to a sheet of paper wherever you want them to go. Eventually you should be training them to only go outside.

But when puppies are young, it's very hard for them to hold their bladder all night long, so still allowing them one sheet of newspaper in the house to go to the bathroom on often works the best.
