Training Puppies Not to Bite

Training puppies not to bite is a very important thing to do while they are still young. Just like young children, young puppies are very impressionable and now is the perfect time to teach them what is right and what is wrong.

First of all, make sure you give your puppy lots of toys to chew on. It should be clear to your puppy what is allowed to be true done and what is not. You should never play tug-of-war with your puppy whenever your hands are close to its face.

This can lead to over excitement on your puppy's part and can easily bite your hand.

Here's what to do if your puppy is biting you:

First of all, if your puppy does bite you, immediately ignore him. You can either leave the room or move the puppy into another room. Your puppy needs to learn quickly that there are consequences for biting the alpha dog in the house.

Another thing to try while your puppy is still young, and their mouths are smart strong enough to do damage, is that you can spray bitter apple on your hands and that way your dog gets a bitter taste in his mouth when trying to bite you.

Play Biting

Another common situation in which puppies bite is they tend to bite when playing. This is a completely natural behavior when they're playing with other puppies.

But because they're playing with humans this is now an unacceptable behavior and one that should be stopped immediately. If you're playing with them and they bite you, then you need to stop playing with them immediately.

Teething

Many puppies tend to increase their biting frequency when they are going through the teething process. Many times chewing on objects helps relieve their pain.

In order to prevent them from chewing on you, be sure you have plenty of chew toys around for them to chew on when they're going through the toothing process.

As you can see, training puppies a difficult thing to do, but it does require consistency on your part, and the part of every member of your household.

You cannot let your child play aggressively with the puppy, and then punish the puppy for being aggressive with you later on. Everyone in the family has to treat the puppy the same.
